Orkney Music Rooms is located on Garrison Road in Hatston and is managed by soprano and music teacher, Hannah Firth. Currently there are three rehearsal spaces available to book. A small practice room equipped with a Yamaha digital piano, suitable for 1 to 1 lessons (The Hugh Inkster Room) a medium sized room containing a digital grand piano, suitable for small ensembles (The Ronnie Aim Room) and a larger rehearsal space equipped with a Hoffmann Grand piano, a Yamaha Stagepas 600BT PA system and a 65” smart TV for teaching and rehearsing larger ensembles/choirs (The Max Room). This is an ongoing project and the end goal is to have five rehearsal rooms in total. It is hoped that this space will become a community resource for musical activities. Rooms are equipped and available to hire by the hour for teaching and rehearsing purposes.

Hannah benefitted from their support and encouragement and that enabled her to pursue her passion and continue her musical education. Her first taste of teaching was working as a tutor for OTMP for beginner accordionists.
Hannah always had a passion for singing and studied MMus in Vocal Performance at the University of Leeds, graduating with distinction. Prior to that she graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Applied Music from the University of the Highlands and Islands. Hannah has benefited from the expertise of renowned vocal teachers in the course of her studies, working with; Sarah Estill, Austin Gunn, Susan Hamilton and Jonathan Watts and has participated in masterclasses with Christine Brewer, Alison Wells, Linda Ormiston and Nicky Spence. Hannah attended specialist singing courses at St Magnus International Festival, Trinity Laban and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and has performed at the Orkney Folk Festival, St Magnus Festival, Celtic Connections, Edinburgh Festival, Edinburgh Fringe, Proms in the Park, with Dorset Opera, Leeds Baroque, Opera Camerata, Northern Opera and has toured throughout Europe with the Edinburgh University Renaissance Singers and with Cantilena. I believe Music is a fundamental part of a rounded education, regardless of whether a student wishes to take it further in life. Learning a musical instrument builds character and teaches grit and endurance, it helps to build confidence and develop empathy. Music teaches students to become resilient and to become comfortable adapting in the moment.
Singing brings a huge variety of health benefits; from releasing endorphins which boost mental wellbeing, breathing techniques which reduce stress, to physically building abdominal muscles and strengthening the lungs.
I passionately believe that education should be approached in a holistic way and I take the principles of the Harmony Education Project very much to heart. Music can be used to teach a wide variety of subjects from the ABC's to Maths, Languages, History, Drama, English Literature and even science subjects.
